SUNGLASSES
Protect your eye health with the fun and fashion of sunglasses.

Too much exposure to UV light can increase your risk of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, eye cancers and growths such as a pterygium. This is especially true for anyone who spends long hours outdoors or near water or snow. It is best to protect your eyes all year long with 100% UV blocking sunglasses, even if it is cloudy. Everyone is at risk so don't forget the kids. Protect their eyes with sunglasses and broad brimmed hats. Polarized sunglasses also improve your vision when driving by cutting down glare from the sun and reflections from other vehicles.

Romeo Optometry offers a wide selection of 100% UV blocking sunglasses in our Sunglass Cove. Visit us to try fun and fashionable styles from suppliers such as Maui Jim, Ray Ban and Oakley, available with prescription or non-prescription lenses. We can also put prescription sunglass lenses into any frame in our selection.

BLUE BLOCKER GLASSES
Blue Glasses.jpg

Blue light wavelengths are the part of the spectrum of light from 380nm to 500nm.  We evolved with the warmer red light of early morning and evening and more of the blue spectrum of light at midday.  When exposed to the red spectrum of light, retinal cells send a signal to the pineal gland to produce melatonin, a hormone that calms your body and helps you fall asleep. Light in the blue spectrum from 450nm to 480nm is greater at midday and promotes wakefulness. The light from computer and other devices peaks at 455nm and can significantly affect the sleep cycle when we use these devices in the evenings. For adults and especially children, it is recommended to stop using devices 2 hours before bed, use the reduced blue light mode on your phone or device or use Blue Blocker Glasses when on devices in the evenings.

Blue Blocker Glasses may also reduce eye strain and eye fatigue when using computers or devices (Computer Vision Syndrome CVS). Current scientific research is inconclusive and we have found mixed results with our patients from profound relief to no effect on their CVS.

There is also a concern that blue light causes damage to the retinal cells.  Again, the studies are inconclusive and the issue controversial.  The human eye is exposed to more blue light from sunlight than from devices and there is no evidence that sunlight causes retinal cell death.

If you are concerned about blue light from devices affecting your sleep cycle or would like to try them for eye fatigue, Romeo Optometry recommends BluTech lenses which block 45% of 455nm blue light and are virtually clear.  They are available in prescription and non-prescription lenses and can be cut into any frame.  Ready-made non-prescription models are available on our web-store.
